On ne sait pas où la plante a été découverte, mais il semble que ce soit un certain William Bull (1828-1902) qui l’ait trouvée le 28 janvier 1887 et introduite depuis le Brésil.
Elle a été décrite en 1887 par Nicholas Edward Brown (1849-1934) dans The Gardeners’ Chronicle: a weekly illustrated journal of horticulture and allied subjects. serie 3 numéro 1, page 346.
L’épithète spécifique signifie distinguée, remarquable.
L’espèce fait partie de la section Tetrachia.
Espèce à tige épaisse et à croissance rapide, tiges ligneuses et généralement nues sauf près du sommet, grandes feuilles charnues, longues et étroites vert clair et texturées, velues, avec un bord rouge légèrement dentelé et légèrement pliées le long de la nervure centrale, fleurs blanches abondantes en grandes grappes ouvertes de la fin de l’hiver et au printemps.

Thick-stemmed, fast-growing species, woody stems generally naked except near the apex, large fleshy leaves, long and narrow light green and textured, hairy, with a slightly serrated red margin and slightly folded along the midrib, flowers abundant white in large open clusters of late winter and spring.
